As a rule pillow should just be thick enough to hold your head in the same relation to your shoulders and spine as you are standing. If you sleep mostly on your side, you would need a thick pillow and for those who sleep on their tummies, a thin one.
If you are allergic, you might want to check with polyester fiberfill ones. These are available in varied softness. Choose the one that best fits you. These kind of pillows aren't as fluffy as feather ones. But they are defintely less likely to give you rash.
